Yunnan is the most ethnically diverse province in China — 25 official minorities, half of them concentrated here. It's also one of the most beautiful: tropical jungle in the south, snow-capped Himalayas in the northwest, the Yangtze in a deep canyon, terraced rice paddies that turn into mirrors at sunset. You don't see Yunnan in 3 days. Plan 8–14.

The original home of pu'er. Tea-picking experiences, ancient tree forests, monastery stays. Combine with a stop in Xishuangbanna for jungle.
Four dishes you don't leave without.
How to actually move.
Bullet trains connect Kunming–Dali–Lijiang. Beyond Lijiang it's buses or flights. Renting a car is easier than you'd think with an international permit, but most travelers go bus + tour.
Things they don't tell you.
- Altitude: Shangri-La and Deqin are 3,200–3,600m. Acclimatize 1–2 days. Drink water, no alcohol on day 1.
- Some southern border areas (near Myanmar/Laos) require permits. Stick to the standard tourist trail and you'll be fine.
